继承语学习和我们普通理解的双语学习(bilingualism or multilingualism)也不同,继承语学习不被外在的、功利的、实用的价值所驱使,继承语能否被继承取决于它的内在的魅力,因而我们不难理解为什么继承语时刻面临着绝迹的危险。根据1999年美国人口普查,美国10%的人口出生在异国,但是研究说明,在两代人到三代人以后,普遍地说,美国移民的继承语就几乎完全丢失了[UCLA, 2001]。这个严峻的事实意味着编写继承语教材面临着非凡的挑战:继承语教材需要比普通语言教材更吸引人。
